Whether you’re after the iconic sunsets of Santorini holidays, the vibrant nightlife of Mykonos holidays, or even planning a quick hop from Athens to Santorini, this guide has you covered. We’ll explore the best Greek islands and help you discover where to find cheap airline tickets and make the most of your vacation. Let’s dive into the top eight Greek islands and see which one could be your perfect escape.

1. Santorini
Best for: shopping and nightlife
I know Santorini might seem like the most generic Greek island choice, the image that comes to mind for everyone when they think of Greece. But there’s a reason for that – Santorini is absolutely fabulous. With its iconic white houses, narrow streets, charming alleyways, and picturesque chapels, Santorini’s architecture is simply breath-taking. While some may view this as a luxury vacation due to its reputation for being pricey, there are always ways to make it affordable. With a little planning, you can find cheap flights, last minute holidays, and budget-friendly accommodations, making your dream Santorini holiday a reality without breaking the bank.#
What to do in Santorini?
If you’re the adventurous type, why not tackle the Fira-Oia Hiking Trail? This scenic route is dotted with charming churches, iconic white buildings, and breath-taking views. Just be sure to stay hydrated in the hot weather, and leave the flip-flops behind!
Santorini has countless beautiful beaches, but my favourites are Amoudi Bay, Kamari Beach, and Perissa Black Sand Beach. Each one offers something unique. The sandier, less pebbly beaches are mostly on the east side of the island, but be aware, they can get pretty busy!

Where to stay in Santorini?
Whether you want to shop ’til you drop or enjoy the vibrant nightlife, I recommend staying in the capital, Fira. For a more laid-back holiday, Oia is the perfect choice. Oia is also renowned for its stunning sunsets, which are my favorite part of island travel. There are plenty of hotels to choose from in both areas, ranging from large resorts to charming boutique hotels, which are my personal preference.

2. Milos
Best for: unique landscapes & history
Milos is famous for its stunning landscapes and beaches, thanks to the minerals found in the island’s hot springs. Adding to its magic, Milos is also where the famous statue of Aphrodite was discovered in 1820. If you’re seeking beautiful, clear-water beaches and a quieter escape during peak season, Milos is definitely worth a visit. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to fly in from Athens or take a ferry, as Milos only has a national airport.
What to do in Milos?
Check out Sarakiniko Beach and the stunning Kleftiko sea caves for some adventure. Milos is home to the charming village of Plaka which is located at the top of a large rock, looking down at the gulf of Milos and is made up of traditional Cycladic Architecture. I highly recommend renting a quad bike or scooter to explore the island. It’s the easiest and most fun way to see all the sights Milos has to offer.

Where to stay in Milos?
If you don’t have a vehicle, Adamas is the best place to stay in Milos. It has plenty of shops and restaurants, and it’s where the port is located. For a more laid-back, authentic experience, choose Plaka with its charming village feel. If you want the same vibe but with higher-end accommodations, stay in Pollonia.
3. Naxos
Best for: beaches & local culture
Naxos is an incredibly beautiful island, best known for its stunning beaches that are perfect for relaxing. The charming old town is rich in local culture and history, making it a must-visit destination. Be sure to add Naxos to your bucket list!

What to do in Naxos?
Naxos is a must-visit Greek island with plenty to offer. Check out the Temple of Apollo and explore the charming Old Town. For beach lovers, Agios Prokopios Beach is a top spot with its clear waters, but don’t miss my personal favorite, Mikri Vigla Beach, known for its excellent windsurfing and quieter vibe.

Where to stay in Naxos?
The best options are around Naxos Town (Chora) for its lively atmosphere, close to restaurants, shops, and the port. If you prefer a beachside location, Agios Prokopios offers great hotels near beautiful sandy beaches. For a more tranquil experience, consider staying near Mikri Vigla, where you can enjoy a peaceful environment with stunning sea views.
I’d like to add that my personal favourite Greek island is Naxos as I think it offers the perfect balance of culture, nightlife, activities and most importantly perfect beaches with amazing water for swimming.
4. Crete
Best for: food & nightlife
Crete, the biggest Greek island, is great for food and nightlife. Try local dishes like dakos and fresh seafood at small restaurants, and enjoy the lively nightlife in places like Heraklion and Chania, where bars and clubs stay busy late into the night. I believe the best place to stay is actually Rethymno. It offers the same vibrant nightlife as the bigger cities but with a more peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere and plenty of sights to explore.

What to do in Crete?
Crete offers incredible beaches like Elafonissi and Falassarna, which are must-visits for any beach lover. However, given the island’s size, where you stay will influence which beaches and attractions you can easily access. I highly recommend renting a car to fully explore Crete’s diverse landscapes and hidden gems. If you take my recommendation and stay in Rethymno, be sure to explore the Old Town for some amazing food. Don’t miss the chance to visit Kourtaliotiko Gorge—though be prepared, the water is freezing! For more details on the gorge, check out the linked blog post.
I also recommend renting a boat in Crete—no license needed! It’s an incredible experience that lets you explore the island from a unique perspective. Be sure to read my blog post about it for all the details!

Where to stay in Crete?
If you prefer not to stay in Rethymno, consider Chania for its charming Venetian harbor and vibrant atmosphere, or Heraklion for easy access to historical sites like Knossos. For a quieter experience, Agios Nikolaos offers stunning views and a relaxed vibe, while Elounda is perfect for a luxurious stay with beautiful beaches. There really is endless choice in Crete!
5. Rhodes
Best for: history & nightlife
Rhodes is known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. With its medieval Old Town, beautiful beaches, and ancient ruins, Rhodes offers a perfect blend of historical intrigue and modern relaxation. It is also know to be one of the cheaper islands to visit, so this would be a great option to get some Greek sun without rinsing the bank account!
What to do in Rhodes?
Whether you’re exploring ancient forts, lounging on sandy shores, or savoring local cuisine, Rhodes provides a diverse and captivating experience. In Rhodes, the two main attractions are exploring the medieval Old Town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its well-preserved medieval architecture and cobblestone streets, and visiting the ancient city of Kamiros, where you can wander through the ruins of an old Greek city and experience its historical significance. If you’re more of a beach lover, why not discover the island’s stunning coastal spots, such as Lindos Beach, Faliraki Beach, and Tsambika Beach?

Where to stay in Rhodes?
In Rhodes, you can stay in the historic Old Town, the lively Faliraki area, or the charming village of Lindos for a mix of culture, nightlife, and scenic beauty. Faliraki is great for those who want to join the vibrant party scene, but you can also stay on the outskirts in a luxury hotel if you prefer a more serene experience.
I hope this helps you choose the perfect Greek island for your getaway. For more island recommendations and tips on planning an island-hopping adventure, be sure to check out my other blog posts in the Travel category.
