How to Throw a Festival Themed 21st Birthday Party: Planning Checklist

Whether you’re turning 21, 5, or even 60, a festival-themed birthday party works for everyone. It’s one of those party ideas that’s easy to adapt, fun to plan, and always creates a relaxed, memorable day. All you really need is a garden (and some good-ish weather), your friends, simple food, a bit of décor, and of course- music to bring it all together.

The best part is, it doesn’t have to be over the top or expensive. With a few thoughtful touches, you can create a laid-back festival experience completely on your own.

Let’s start with a simple checklist of everything you need to plan the perfect festival-themed 21st birthday party, including easy ways to pull it all together.

1. Set the Vibe

Choose your style, there’s some inspiration below so you can see how different each one can be!

Along with this, you need to decide on your colour palette (neutrals, pastels, or bright festival colours).

2. Decorations

  • Fairy lights or string lights
  • Blankets, rugs and cushions
  • Bunting or banners
  • Candles or lanterns (LED)
  • Balloons (neutral or themed colours)
  • Small tables or creates for food and drinks

This may seem overwhelming and a lot. But you really don’t need to spend a lot to create the right atmosphere. Don’t underestimate Temu! You can find almost everything you want from there, just make sure you plan ahead for the delivery times. I’ve linked below some great Temu finds to get you started.

3. Music

You need to create a playlist in advance. A great way of making sure everyone’s music taste is catered for is a shared Spotify playlist.

To do this, create a new playlist in Spotify, give it a name (something like “Amy’s 21st Festival Party”), then tap the three dots at the top and select “Invite collaborators”. You can then copy the link and send it to your friends in your group chat. Once they open it, they’ll be able to add songs directly to the playlist.

Start it off with a few songs to set the vibe then let everyone else add to it!

4. Food & Drinks

Picnic-style food:

  • Sandwiches, wraps, snack boards
  • Crisps, fruit, sweet treats
  • Charcuterie board

Easy drinks:

  • Pre-made jugs (mocktails/cocktails)
  • Cans or bottles

Optional: themed drinks station with personalised cocktails.

5. Seating

Keep this relaxed, you don’t need formal seating. People normally stand up at these kind of garden parties. A few blankets and cushions on the grass will keep it cosy, as well as bean bags if you have them.

If you live in the UK, where good weather isn’t guaranteed, a gazebo or small shelter can be helpful for getting out of the sun (or the drizzle!).

6. Activities & Extras

This is where you can add your own unique touch, a few ideas are

  • Disposable cameras for guests
  • Simple games (cars, garden jenga)
  • DIY flower crown station
  • Polaroid or photo corner

7. Evening Lighting

When it starts to get dark you will need to light up the garden, the decorations like fairy lights, lanterns or candles can help with this. Just a few soft light sources placed around your seating area will create that relaxed, cosy festival feel that keeps the party going into the evening.

If you have a fire pit, you can start a fire to keep warm and keep the party going!

8. Outfits (optional but fun)

On your invitations you could suggest a theme like ‘festival outfits’ or ‘country cow-girl vibes’ but keep it optional so it stays low pressure. You can go all out yourself but this will make the pictures and memories look amazing” Especially if you are going for those Coachella vibes!

9. Practical Bits

Don’t forget the boring practical bits to keep everything running smoothly and have a quick clean-up.

  • Bin bags
  • Cups, plates and napkins
  • Portable speaker
  • Extension leads if needed
  • Check weather + have a backup plan

Ready to Plan?

Save this checklist and start with the basics – music, seating, and a cosy setup. The rest will come together naturally.
